Taihape has a long history of community, with the gatherings by the early settlers starting it off.

“For the first generation or two of Taihape families, life was spent within the separate small communities where the work of the weekdays became the social life of the weekend.??? This developed in competitions and clubs whom played each other every weekend. “The woman visited on Thursdays. Why Thursdays, no one is quite sure, but it was not wash day, nor baking day, nor was it time to prepare for the weekend, so Thursday it was. Sharing conversation, learning new ideas from each other, helping solve problems, these outings were the forerunners of later organised social clubs with planned activities.???

Community Notice:

The Taihape Community is in the middle of a feasibility study regarding Memorial Park. This park holds all of the town’s sport facilities, the indoor swimming pool and from the end of the year the new area school which will be the most technically advanced school in New Zealand. The study will seek input from the community through meetings and even the town’s website is a tool used to communicate with all those that are interested. The study is a stepping stone to further improve what already is on offer in Taihape. For more information and to participate, click here.
