Taihape Community Leisure Hub Project

In June 2007, The Taihape Community Development Trust initiated the Taihape Community Leisure Hub Project. Step 1 included a feasibility study and various meetings. For more information on this step click here.

Step 2: Drafting a plan with the community
The feasibility study has been finalised and a summary report is downloadable from here.

All groups and clubs in and around Taihape were invited to attend the next community meeting to discuss the project which took place on Monday 1 December. Groups were asked to:

  • put forward ideas and plans for their club or group;
  • ideas for sharing facilities with other groups; or
  • interest in sharing other groups’ facilities.

Groups were asked to actively consult with members regarding club ownership, facilities and plans prior to the meeting.

The meeting was well attended and the minutes of the meeting are downloadable from here. Next, the steering committee which was formed at the first meeting was held on Monday 15 December 2009.

Since then, the Leisure Hub Steering Committee has had varous meetings to decide on a location for the Leisure Hub Complex and additional facilities that are in need of an upgrade. Sport Wanganui is now also involved and is helping the committee in finding a way forward towards a 'sustainable future for both the Leisure Hub Facilities and the sport clubs & groups in Taihape'.

The Steering Group established following a public meeting in December 2008 has worked through a master site plan for the development of a Community Leisure Hub at Memorial Park in Taihape. The programme (as at 25th May 2009) includes three projects. To download a copy of the draft brief for the architect click here

The first sketch plan of the proposed Leisure Hub was presented by architect Mike Swann to the building project committee in June. The plans show the ground floor will house six changing rooms, and facilities, three squash courts, a referees room, St John room, two small offices and a reception area in the entrance lobby. It also includes a lift, an internal stairwell, and a storage area. The first floors main lounge of 186 square metres can be closed into two smaller lounges. There is also room for three snooker tables and two smaller meeting rooms. A full length glass wall will look over the 300-seat grandstand on to the main playing field. Kitchen and bar and toilet facilities are included on this floor. Public access to the grandstand is either via external stairs or through the lounge. A feature of the squash courts is moveble walls that can change the profile of the courts to either two doubles or one large area suitable for indoor bowls or perhaps aerobic classes. The final plans will incorporate all the desired facilities and amenities as stipulated by sports club representatives on the steering group

Stage one of the development is estimated to cost $3 to $4 million. So far $665,000 has been pledged. A funding application to the Lotteries Commission is due to be lodged  at the end of July. Applications will also be made to other funding agencies and corporates could be offered naming rights. A fundraising Committee has started up and will start the mammoth drive to raise funds to build the new centre. The committee is looking at options including merchandising - like t-shirts and events such as a horse trek, motorcross, garden tours, christmas decorations tour, a casino night, local music night, sausage sizzles, cake stalls, and projects like gatekeeping for the A&P Show. A buy a plaque scheme is also being looked at. Clubs, groups adn individuals will also be approached for donations.

August 2009 - Draft 5 of the proposed Leisure Centre in Taihape was released to the public for viewing. Representives from many clubs in Taihape have met many times to finalise these plans to take to the public. A community consultation process will begin soon so everybody can have their say about the proposed plans. click here to view Draft 5 Leisure Centre plans.

The Community Meeting is to be held on 28 September at the Pirates Club rooms. This will give the community a chance to voice their opinions on the proposed plans.
