GUMBOOT DAY

This is going to be a very exciting
and full on day in Taihape!!!

Saturday 25 October 2008

10 am till 4.30 pm

After having been away for a brief period, it's back! Gumboot Day was first held in 1985 and its purpose was to provide a promotional activity to entice travellers to stop and see what Taihape had to offer. Over the years the event has grown into a national draw card for people from throughout New Zealand and it has even acclaimed international fame.

The Taihape Community Development Trust will be organising this year’s event and has assembled a committee that will guarantee that iconic Gumboot Day feeling will once again return. This year’s event will take place on Saturday 25 October 2008 and will officially start at 10 am.

The markets, which will be held throughout the town will entertain people from 9 am till 4.30 pm, however the major draw card to the event is the Gumboot Throwing Competition.

Taihape has a permanent Gumboot Throwing Lane in the ‘Outback’ and this field is expected to be the major ‘hub’ of the day with people from all ages, backgrounds and abilities able to throw a gumboot and set a new record! The event will be surrounded by the typical New Zealand Kiwiana feeling with music, gumboot marches, games and Fred Dag lookalikes.

The event will bring together the Taihape central business sector, its township community and the farming region. None of these would be able to exist without each other.

“Here’s a thought, we are planning to decorate the Main Street with old gumboots that have been painted. Please let us have your old gumboots. Drop them off at my office (in the Town Hall). Would be great if they’ve had a quick wash or you may even wish to paint them up yourselves.???
